Saint Nicholas Abbey, a jewel of Norman architecture, needs your support now more than ever to preserve its history and exceptional heritage.
In 2009, the Normandie Sud Eure Community of Communes made a decisive choice by purchasing Saint Nicholas Abbey, which had been put up for sale by the Diocese of Évreux. This decision marked the beginning of a new chapter for this historic site.
Since its acquisition, the local authority has undertaken an ambitious program of restoration and enhancement:
Restoration of Wooden Elements
Creation of a Gift Shop
Roof Renovation
Restoration of the Abbess’s Parlor
Cloister Garden Landscaping
Conservation of Historic Stained Glass
Clock Repair and Reactivation
Landscaping of the abbey’s Cour d’Honneur
Today, the abbey is a vibrant place that regularly hosts temporary exhibitions and family-friendly events, thus keeping the memory of the Benedictine nuns alive.
Iconic military structures of Verneuil-sur-Avre, the ramparts and the Armentières Gate were built in the 12th century, during the founding of the town by Henry I Beauclerc, Duke of Normandy and King of England.
Preservation of the Armentières Gate
A true symbol of medieval Verneuil, the majestic Armentières Gate is the last remaining witness of the seven fortified gates that once protected the walled city. This historic monument is said to have seen Saint Louis pass through in July 1257, as he returned from a pilgrimage to Mont-Saint-Michel.
Restoration of the Medieval Fortifications (12th Century)
In the 18th century, much of the medieval ramparts were dismantled, as residents were granted permission to reuse the stones to build their houses. One notable exception remains: at the request of the Benedictine nuns, a 360-meter section of the ramparts surrounding Saint Nicholas Abbey was preserved.
Today, this unique historic heritage — a witness to nearly nine centuries of history — is the focus of a preservation and enhancement program.
